Assemblyman Brian Maher has joined a bipartisan group supporting legislation that would require the New York Department of Health to conduct a feasibility and actuarial study on long-term care services. The bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Anna Kelles, aims to explore whether a public long-term care insurance option is possible for the state. The findings and recommendations from this study would be submitted to both the governor and the Legislature.

New York’s current system for long-term care is reported to put financial pressure on families, seniors, and caregivers. Many individuals are required to use their savings to pay for necessary care. Lawmakers from both parties have agreed that an objective review of the existing system is needed before making any major policy decisions, especially as the state’s population ages over the next decade.

Eamon McAuliffe, legislative aide to Assemblyman Maher, stated: “Assemblyman Maher believes that long-term care is one of the most challenging issues facing families across New York, and the current system is clearly broken. This bipartisan legislation simply calls for a study—so lawmakers can understand the costs, options and impacts before any decisions are made. Assemblyman Maher believes in working across the aisle and doing the homework first to make sure any future proposals are realistic, responsible and fair to taxpayers.”

Maher represents New York’s 101st Assembly District as a member of both the Republican and Conservative parties. He operates offices in Walden at 74 West Main Street and in Albany at LOB 819 while participating in legislative activities related to health care protections, utility bills, nonprofit reform, and energy policy through monthly newsletters (https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Brian-Maher). His work includes advocating for bipartisan bills and supporting various reforms (https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Brian-Maher).

The proposed study reflects ongoing efforts among lawmakers like Maher who engage in legislative representation for their districts (https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Brian-Maher).
