Assemblyman Brian Maher has announced the re-launch of an online petition to prevent the release of Juan Peinado, who was convicted of murdering 11-year-old Danny Meyer in 1996. The announcement coincides with what would have been Meyer’s 41st birthday. Peinado, having served over 25 years in prison, was first eligible for parole in 2021 but was denied following significant public opposition and emotional testimony from Meyer’s family.
Under current state law, violent offenders like Peinado are granted a new parole hearing every two years. His next hearing is scheduled for August 2025. Maher emphasized the importance of justice and community safety, stating, “Danny Meyer should be a grown man today, possibly with a family of his own. Instead, his life was cut short in a senseless act of violence that forever changed a family and a community.”
Maher is collaborating with Meyer’s family and friends to circulate the petition across Orange County and New York State. The campaign seeks to show continued public opposition to Peinado’s release. “This petition is more than just names on a page — it’s a voice for Danny, and a call for continued justice,” said Maher.
The public is encouraged to participate by signing the petition and sending letters to the New York State Parole Board. Details are available on Maher’s official website and social media platforms.
Instructions for submitting petitions include using Juan Peinado’s corrections identification number (DIN: 97A7185) when writing directly to the NYS Board of Parole.
