Picture this: Sunlight filters through lush trees, a cool breeze carries the scent of pine, and the trail ahead promises adventure in the 98th Assembly District. Spanning parts of Orange and Rockland counties, this area is a treasure trove of state and local parks, lakes, and trails that attract visitors from New York City and beyond. State Rep. Karl A. Brabenec expressed enthusiasm for sharing these natural wonders with residents.
Harriman State Park, New York’s second-largest state park, offers 31 lakes and reservoirs, over 200 miles of trails, beaches, camping areas, and boat launches across Orange and Rockland counties. Sterling Forest State Park spans nearly 22,000 acres in Orange County’s Ramapo Mountains and provides hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and seasonal hunting opportunities.
Local attractions include the Brandwein Nature Learning Preserve in Orange County for conservation education; Dater Mountain Nature Park in Sloatsburg for rugged hiking paths; Fitzgerald Falls Trail in Southfields as part of the Appalachian Trail; Pine Meadow Trail loop in Tuxedo Park offering sweeping views; and Greenwood Lake for swimming.
Rep. Brabenec highlighted his efforts to preserve these spaces through legislative work such as co-sponsoring the Hudson Valley Community Preservation Act in 2019. This law allows communities to fund open space protection to ensure regional beauty endures.
