Today marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a key figure in the American civil rights movement.

The day is recognized as a national “Day of Service,” making it unique among U.S. federal holidays for its focus on community service. The observance encourages Americans to reflect on Dr. King’s efforts toward racial equality and justice, remember the broader Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century, volunteer locally, and continue promoting fairness and justice for all.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as an official U.S. holiday in 1983 after a 15-year campaign led by civil rights activists following Dr. King’s assassination in 1968. Former Congressman John Conyers introduced legislation to create the holiday just days after Dr. King’s death.

Initial resistance to the proposal came from lawmakers who cited concerns about costs associated with an additional federal holiday, hesitancy over honoring private citizens rather than public officials, and opposition to Dr. King’s views. Despite these challenges, Congress passed the bill in 1983, and President Ronald Reagan signed it into law on November 2 of that year. The first nationwide observance took place on January 20, 1986; by 2000, all fifty states officially recognized Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Today, I encourage everyone to get involved and celebrate Dr. King’s life and vision for the future,” said New York State Rep. Karl Brabenec (R-Florida). “Attend a commemorative march or parade, volunteer for agencies active in underprivileged communities, visit historic monuments and museums highlighting the significance of the Civil Rights Movement or even visit a memorial to pay tribute to Dr. King and others like him.”

In Orange and Rockland counties within New York’s 98th Assembly District, several events are being held to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
