Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) has achieved Magnet recognition for the second time, reaffirming its commitment to high-quality nursing practice. The Magnet Recognition Program, run by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, is known as the highest national honor for professional nursing and distinguishes organizations that meet strict standards of excellence.

“Being named a Magnet organization reflects Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall’s unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery,” said Daniel Maughan. “This prestigious recognition—one of the highest honors in nursing—also represents the collective dedication, compassion, and collaboration of our entire hospital team. From clinical staff to support services, every department plays a vital role in creating the environment that makes Magnet designation possible. The MSLC team is truly deserving of this honor.”

Magnet status is considered a benchmark for nursing quality and is included as a factor in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of hospitals across the country.

“Being named a Magnet organization reflects Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall’s unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery,” said Margaret Allers, Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. “This prestigious recognition—one of the highest honors in nursing—also represents the collective dedication, compassion, and collaboration of our entire hospital team.”

The process to earn initial Magnet recognition involves an electronic application, written documentation on patient care practices, an on-site evaluation, and review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition. Hospitals must reapply every four years by demonstrating adherence to Five Magnet components and 82 standards related to patient care and clinical outcomes.

Organizations seeking renewal must provide evidence showing sustained or improved performance since their last designation. MSLC was recognized with nine exemplars for clinical outcomes after outperforming national benchmarks for most inpatient units over eight consecutive quarters.

“We’re a better organization today because of the Magnet recognition we first achieved four years ago,” said Allers. “Magnet recognition raised the bar for patient care and inspired every member of our team to achieve excellence every day. It is this commitment to providing our community with high-quality care that helped us become a Magnet-recognized organization, and it’s why we continue to pursue and maintain our Magnet designation”

MSLC serves more than 250,000 patients annually throughout Hudson Valley as part of Montefiore Health System.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center administers the Magnet Recognition Program globally as part of its mission to identify health care organizations that deliver top-level nursing care.
