About 200 seniors from Orange County attended a 70s-themed dance party in Montgomery as part of the county’s Senior Games program. The event, organized by the Orange County Office for the Aging (OFA), included three hours of dancing to music from the era, socializing, and a “Best Dressed” contest.

The dance party is one of several activities held throughout the year for residents aged 55 and older. The Senior Games season runs from September to August, beginning with an opening ceremony and ending with a closing ceremony. Monthly events are designed to help older adults remain active and engaged. Previous activities have included bowling, scavenger hunts, bingo tournaments, hiking, pickleball, fishing derbies, art shows, and intergenerational gatherings. Future events will feature Game Day at the Newburgh Armory in March and Mini Golf and Batting Cages at Pitch and Putt in Washingtonville in April.

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said: “Our seniors are the heart of this community and seeing them come together with such joy and energy is inspiring. The Senior Games continue to grow because they offer what our seniors value: fun, connection, and opportunities to stay active. I’m grateful to Danielle Diana Smith and her team at the County’s Office for the Aging for making these events available and meaningful.”

Danielle Diana Smith, Executive Director of OFA, stated: “Participation in the Orange County Senior Games is about much more than medals; it’s about staying active and engaged in life as we age. When older adults challenge themselves physically and mentally and celebrate each other’s achievements, they show our community that aging can be healthy, vibrant, and full of purpose. Staying active promotes health and wellness and helps to foster the social connections that are so important to one’s mental health.”

Enrollment requires a $20 annual fee that covers all events for the year. Most activities include lunch, giveaways, as well as information or assistance provided by OFA staff.
