Bipartisan resolution recognizes the work of osteopathic medicine in caring for rural and underserved populations, builds on Ryan’s commitment to expanding access to affordable health care
WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congressman Pat Ryan introduced a resolution honoring the 125th anniversary of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) and recognizing the doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who devote their time and skills to patients in our community. Ryan’s district is home to the Middletown campus of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“Everyone in the Hudson Valley deserves access to affordable, quality health care, and the DOs trained at Touro help make that a reality, especially in our underserved communities,” said Representative Ryan. “Osteopathic medicine is one of the fastest growing medical fields in the U.S., and our students at the Middletown campus of Touro are leading that exciting growth. With their holistic approach to care, these doctors help keep Hudson Valley families healthy.”
“As we recognize the 125th anniversary of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, we can celebrate the fact that our profession is stronger than ever,” said Kenneth J. Steier, DO, executive dean and chief academic officer, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, Harlem, Middletown and Great Falls campuses. “Our schools are educating 25 percent of the nation’s future physicians, many of whom go on to care for patients in rural and medically underserved areas. I am proud of how far we’ve come, and am very grateful to Rep. Ryan and the other cosponsors for recognizing the difference osteopathic medicine is making in communities like Middletown, New York and for patients everywhere.”
Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is one of 40 osteopathic medical colleges represented by AACOM. AACOM was founded in 1898 to support the nation’s growing number of osteopathic medical schools. AACOM holds serving rural and underserved populations as a key pillar of its mission, with 60% of osteopathic medical schools located in areas of health professional shortages. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes a holistic approach to health care, including health promotion and disease prevention.
