This past weekend, Americans worldwide honored men and women who served in the armed forces with Veterans Day. The day holds significant importance for many, including those with personal connections to veterans.

"I consider Veterans Day to be very important," said one observer. "Not only because my father was a Navy veteran and the day gives me an opportunity to remember him intentionally but because it is also a day when we come together as a nation to pay tribute to those who gave so much so we can all enjoy what we love."

Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the debt of gratitude owed to those who have defended freedoms and protected ways of life. The observer noted attending several events over the weekend, including ceremonies in Port Jervis, Warwick, and Suffern. These events were described as "wonderful tributes" to veterans. Additionally, they visited the Greenville VFW facility for a special fundraising event titled “Spaghetti Dinner for Veterans.”

The importance of Veterans Day extends beyond traditions and observances. It highlights the sacrifices made by veterans who put their lives on the line, leaving behind home comforts to safeguard the nation. They endure service hardships, face danger, physical and emotional traumas, and spend time away from loved ones.

"This day is also an opportunity for us to reflect on the value of freedom," another participant stated. "Our veterans are the embodiment of the principles our nation was founded upon: liberty, democracy and justice."

Veterans have defended these ideals in times of war and peace, serving as examples for all citizens. The observer emphasized that freedoms are not free but come at a cost paid by veterans.

Veterans Day also has unifying power across political beliefs, backgrounds or differences. It fosters shared appreciation that transcends divisions and brings people together.

"In a world that sometimes seems divided," remarked another attendee, "Veterans Day is a beacon of unity." It is seen as a day when differences are set aside to honor heroes who have protected the nation—a day marked by gratitude, reflection and unity.

Let us always hold their service close to our hearts every day.
