Assemblyman Karl Brabenec has announced that the Ramapo-Catskill Library System will receive over $1.6 million in state funding for essential library construction projects. This includes $75,000 for improvements at the Greenwood Lake Public Library and $270,000 for HVAC system upgrades and security camera installations at the Suffern Free Library.

“These investments in our local libraries will ensure that they remain safe, accessible, and equipped to serve the evolving needs of our communities,” Brabenec stated. He emphasized the role of libraries as "central hubs for education, culture, and access to technology."

Jill Cronin, Director of Greenwood Lake Public Library, expressed her gratitude for the financial support. “This funding will allow us to address long-overdue building issues that will improve the library's safety and comfort for everyone who uses it,” she said.

The funding is part of a broader $34 million allocation from the FY2023-2024 State Budget aimed at public library construction and broadband infrastructure projects across New York. A survey indicated a need for over $1.75 billion in renovations due to aging infrastructure among public libraries statewide.

Over half of New York’s libraries are more than 60 years old and face challenges such as accommodating users with disabilities, energy inefficiency, and insufficient electrical capacity to support modern technology needs like computers and internet services. Many also lack adequate space for collections or meeting rooms.

Eligible projects under the State Aid for Library Construction Program include new buildings, facility expansions, extensive renovations such as roof replacements, new HVAC systems, electrical upgrades, installation of alternative energy sources, broadband improvements, accessibility enhancements for disabled patrons, and investment in new furniture or equipment.
