On June 19, 1865, Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. It was a full two and half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
For more than 150 years, this momentous occasion has been celebrated as Juneteenth, a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, celebrate freedom, honor Black culture and history, and recognize the continued work needed to achieve racial justice, equity, and equality in America. SUNY Sullivan celebrates Juneteenth today and is proud to observe the Juneteenth federal holiday on Monday, June 20.
