Ahead of Rally to “Save the River,” Congressman Pat Ryan Convenes First Environmental Roundtable to Discuss Climate Action Priorities for Hudson Valley

NEWBURGH, NY– On May 5, joined by leaders of environmental groups from across the region, Congressman Pat Ryan convened his first environmental roundtable to discuss his climate action priorities for the Hudson Valley.  Tomorrow, Ryan will speak at the “Save the River” rally to oppose Holtec’s plan to discharge 1 million gallons of radioactive water into the Hudson River. 

“Everyone in the Hudson Valley deserves access to clean water, air, and soil. In order to deliver on that promise, we need the entire community in this fight together.” said Representative Ryan. “This isn’t just about leaving behind a cleaner earth for our kids and grandkids. It is about creating good-paying middle class jobs, protecting our national security with energy independence, and removing the PFAS and other forever chemicals that threaten our health and safety. I will continue working every day to combat the climate crisis, and look forward to partnering with these organizations from across the district in that effort.”

“Combating the climate crisis is a team effort that requires the entire community coming to the table. That’s what makes discussions like the one we had today so valuable.” said Andy Bicking, Director of Government Relations and Public Policy at Scenic Hudson. “I’ve worked with Congressman Ryan for years, and I know firsthand that he is a tireless advocate for the environment. He understands the work required to safeguard the Hudson Valley’s irreplaceable landscapes in a time of unprecedented challenges. I look forward to continuing to fight alongside him as we protect the environment and this region we are all proud to call home.” 

Congressman Pat Ryan is a longtime champion of the environment. Since entering Congress, Ryan:

  • Alongside Congressman Molinaro, called for the full removal of PCBs from the Hudson in an op-ed in “The Hill”
  • Sent a letter to Holetc alongside other Hudson Valley Members of Congress expressing alarm over the environmental and health risks associated with dumping 45,000 gallons of radioactive wastewater from the Indian Point Energy Center 
  • Introduced the Climate Emergency Resolution, asking the Biden Administration declare the climate a national emergency which would unlock emergency powers to address climate change 
  • Requested increased funding for the National Parks System and the National Heritage Site System which help to support the conservation efforts in twenty two national parks in New York State and the Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area 
  • Requested increase funding for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund which is a federal-state partnership that assists communities for provide for a wide range of water quality projects 
  • Signed onto legislation to reauthorization and create programs like the Delaware River Basin Conservation Reauthorization Act and the New York-New Jersey Watershed Restoration Program
