Assemblyman Brian Maher, representing Walden, has taken a stand against the illicit sale of cannabis in New York State. Maher joined forces with colleagues across party lines and advocates from the state's cannabis industry to support proposal A9520. This proposal aims to revoke licenses for the sale of cigarettes, tobacco products, alcohol, and lottery tickets from businesses found in possession of illicit cannabis in violation of the law.

"We need to do everything in our power to stop the illicit sale of cannabis within our communities and throughout New York State," Maher stressed. He further highlighted the dangers of the existing black market and the urgent need to address this issue. Maher underlined the importance of bipartisan cooperation in cracking down on the illicit cannabis trade, emphasizing the potential risks associated with delays in implementing stricter regulations.

Maher also pointed out the connection between the illicit cannabis market and the distribution of dangerous substances like fentanyl and xylazine, which have been causing fatalities across the state. He urged for the swift adoption of legislation to empower local law enforcement in combating the black market, stating, "Every minute we wait could cost another New Yorker their life."

The collaborative effort led by Assemblyman Maher reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding communities from the harmful impacts of illicit cannabis sales.
