Assemblymember Maher expressed disappointment and concern after reflecting on the recently passed 2024-25 New York state budget. While some advocated items made it into the budget, Maher highlighted several issues that left him unable to support the budget.
One of the positive aspects Maher mentioned was the defeat of the Governor's proposed cut to foundation aid for school districts and the inclusion of measures to address childcare needs and make college more affordable for New Yorkers. However, Maher raised alarms about the significant increase in state spending over the years, which has not been adequately allocated to crucial areas like infrastructure and supporting direct-service professionals in the human services industry.
Maher emphasized the importance of addressing various pressing issues in the state, including crime, affordability, the migrant crisis, and workforce-related emergencies. He lamented the lack of transparency in the budget process, calling for more collaboration across party lines to better serve the people of New York.
"It’s unfortunate that the budget process in New York is always subject to a rushed process with absolutely no transparency. I would love to see us work together and I will do my very best to continue to work with my colleagues, regardless of party, to ensure we do more for the people of my district and the state of New York,” said Maher.
