Albany is once again bustling with political activity. Following the ceremonial start of the 2024 session last week, anticipation builds for the governor’s 2024 State of the State address. The election cycle is also beginning to intensify, leading to an influx of political advertisements and campaigns aimed at swaying voters.

Amid this environment, a key focus remains on addressing the needs of Orange and Rockland counties. Despite not having reviewed the governor’s State of the State or any policy agenda from the Majority Party in the Legislature, certain goals have emerged. These include reinforcing consumer protections and expanding laws to prevent New Yorkers from being exploited by unethical business practices. Another significant proposal involves protecting low-income citizens from medical debt lawsuits.

Several issues are on my agenda for this year. A proposal for an animal abuse hotline has been drafted in bill A.5405, reflecting New York's capacity to improve animal care. Caylee’s Law, detailed in A.5452, aims to enhance childhood protection by ensuring swift adult responses when children go missing. Additionally, bill A.5592 seeks to address the drug epidemic by criminalizing fentanyl possession and deterring its trafficking.

Currently, we await further details on the majority conference's priorities. With a major election year ahead and a budget requiring careful management, efforts will be focused on ensuring that community voices are heard and needs addressed.
