Concerns over financial mismanagement have prompted calls for a forensic audit of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Reports indicate significant financial discrepancies, including $800 million lost to fare evasion and $5 billion in unpaid tolls. Additionally, there are allegations of falsified inspection records.
Critics argue that these issues highlight a failure in accountability and transparency within the agency. In response to these concerns, Maher has emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the MTA's finances.
“The MTA’s financial mismanagement is unacceptable," Maher stated. "Reports of $800 million lost to fare evasion, $5 billion in unpaid tolls, and falsified inspection records make it clear that this agency is failing taxpayers."
Maher further criticized the agency's approach to funding, arguing against additional commuter taxes as a solution. "Instead of demanding another commuter tax, the MTA must be held accountable for its reckless spending and lack of transparency," he said.
The call for a forensic audit aims to provide clarity on how public funds are being utilized by the MTA. "A full forensic audit is not just necessary—it’s long overdue," Maher insisted. He stressed that New Yorkers have a right to understand how their money is being managed: "New Yorkers deserve to know where their money is going and that their hard-earned dollars are being spent responsibly.”
