City of Kingston’s Building Safety Department Launches Online Permit Portal

Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that the City of Kingston’s Building Safety Department has moved to an online permitting platform.

The new permitting platform, City Squared, allows for residents and contractors to apply for permits, pay fees, and submit plans and other documents online.

All building permits, including commercial and residential additions or alterations, pool installation, and solar installation, can be applied for through the online portal. Electricians and plumbers can also apply for electrical and plumbing permits through the portal.

“We wanted to make Building Safety registration more accessible for all, and this new online portal will help reduce the time it takes to get a permit, and reduce trips to the Building Safety office,” said Mayor Noble. “I want to thank the Building department and our IT department for implementing this new software, which we think will greatly benefit all who use it. Upgrading the City of Kingston’s technology is one the priorities I laid out in my 2023 State of the City speech, including updating the City’s website and our online budget book. All of these technological improvements increase transparency and make life a little easier for our residents.”

“The Building Safety Department is pleased to roll out this new online permitting system. We will still accept paper applications at this time, but we are working toward 100% online permitting by the end of this year,” said Stephan Knox, Director of Building Safety & Zoning Enforcement. “We will also be installing a computer terminal for public use here at the Building Safety office, should residents need assistance with their submission. We are happy to be able to provide this convenient portal for our residents and contractors.”

The online portal can be found by visiting https://kingston-ny.gov/building.
