Molinaro to Senate: Do Your Job. Upstate New Yorkers Should Not Bear Cost of Washington’s Inaction & Dysfunction

Washington, DC –  U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro (NY-19) today called out the U.S. Senate for heading home without taking action to lift the debt limit. In  two weeks the U.S. Treasury could exhaust measures to finance federal government operations. Despite this, the Senate is preparing to leave Washington on Friday.

Last month, the House of Representatives, with Rep. Molinaro’s support passed legislation to lift the debt ceiling. So far, the Senate has not passed legislation to lift the debt ceiling and President Biden has declined to engage in good-faith, bipartisan negotiations on the debt ceiling.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Molinaro and 13 other lawmakers urged him to keep Senators in Washington until legislation to lift the debt ceiling has been passed.

Rep. Molinaro said, “If the United States defaults, programs that Upstate New Yorkers rely on like Social Security, Medicare, and veterans benefits will be at-risk. I voted to pass legislation to lift the debt limit and avoid a default. So far, the Democratic-led Senate has taken no action and is set to leave Washington as the debt ceiling hangs in the balance. Upstate New Yorkers should not bear the cost of Washington’s inaction and dysfunction. It’s time to put the politics aside and find common ground to lift the debt ceiling and bend the rate of unstainable spending.”
